More honest tension in this human story of people grappling with cross cultural and family currents than in all of the summer blockbusters combined. A beautiful work of life and cinema.

I have read the book and the adaptation is very well done. The cinematography is beautiful, the actors good. This is not an action movie and the rhythm is slow but this fallows the story... I really liked it!

Very fascinating movie which gave me an inside look of life of arrangement marriage in Bangladesh. We see The good and the bad. You can actually feel what the main character goes through, the sacrifice she made. But what was interesting was the way they portray the difficulties of maintaining your culture in the western civilization or should I say trying to combine your value with an ever growing society. I even felt sympathy toward to husband not because he was a bad person but because he was just a bad husband.

A "slice of life" movie... mildly interesting but little substance.. I felt a bit like a voyeur. Not much drama , grit or excitement... some scenes were comical although I don't think it was the director's intention.

Brick Lane is a poignant story that will definitely evoke emotion from men and women alike. It is a powerful and honest film about the state of affairs with many immigrants in the West. Well-acted and beautifully shot, the film leaves no loose ends. The mother-daughter relationship is just beautiful. Only misogynist men will be offended by this film because they do not want to imagine a woman making her own decisions about love and life.

I can see the appeal of the movie to those who may have read the novel. Your standard Oprah fair, plucky woman overcomes adversity and has a "light-bulb" moment. Add a little Bollywood type romance and there ya go-Brick Lane. Pretty predictable and average cinema. The kinda of movie ladies bring there man to and he ends up falling asleep. I preferred The Namesake as an adaptation and straight up story of immigrants/culture clash. See it on cable or for free.

I loved the movie. I thought it was a beautiful story about love and family. I thought it was very realistic. I thought the actress playing the mother was wonderful and beautiful. I went with two other friends: one loved it, one didn't like it.

Brick Lane very poetically and skillfully translates a story that largely takes place in the mind of a deeply repressed woman. It has moving insights into the nature of sense of place and learning to live in the present. It also touchingly illustrates the different ways that people can love and how people change over time without even realizing it.

Superbly acted (not a single poor performance), beautifully written, and a gripping story. At once it's heartbreaking and then becomes liberating. A 'must see', for sure. The best I've seen this year.

This film is emotionally stirring, beautifully shot, and superbly acted. There isn't one poor performance in the entire movie. The story is gripping and beautifully written - it's both heartbreaking and (at the end) uplifting. The best film I've seen this year, by far.

An engaging movie. A particularly good story of immigrant life. Dealing with isolation, struggles to make it in the new world, confronting old world values, and making the new world home. The struggles of this heroine is worth witnessing. A good story well told.
