Are you looking for a widely accessible mainstream Hollywood blockbuster? Then see something else. But if you're in the mood for a very alternative, unusual and challenging arthouse film, filled with a quirky cast of characters, then Mister Lonely might just be for you. Harmony Korine stages a number of imaginative and striking images, at times practically bringing to life those popular neon-tinged prints of famous Hollywood celebrities hanging out together in ordinary settings - although his backgrounds tend to be far more scenic. Reminiscent of the surreal head trips of Charlie Kaufman and Michel Gondry as well as psychedelic magic carpet rides of the sixties and seventies from directors like Ken Russell, Mister Lonely is at its essence a softly mournful meditation on the human struggle to fulfill one's dreams and how disappointment, suffering and death have a nasty way of crashing the party. Mister Lonely reminds us that while we strive to find meaningful connections to others, ultimately life is a lonely pursuit.
