Tom Hanks is simply one of the best actors alive. He took an otherwise uninteresting piece of CNN type storyline and made it into something more appealing to the general audience. He made it into a movie worth seeing.

Very good movie. Tom Hanks and Julie Roberts are always worth watching. Phillip Seymore Hoffmans' performance takes this from a "worth seeing" to a "don't miss it" movie.

A great mix of entertainment and important (and relevant) information. I like how the current situations in Iraq and Afganistan push at the back of your mind while you watch the film. As much as I liked Hanks' performance, I think it's Philip Seymour Hoffman who really takes the cake with an AWESOME performance. That being said, I don't see why the Award shows are giving this film so much attention. It's fun but it's really nothing special. Especially Julia Roberts' performance. What's the big deal?! It's an important story to tell because this is common U. S. foreign policy (supplying weapons and cash to the enemies of the enemies of the U. S.) I like (sincerely, not sarcastically) how the film avoids mentioning that Osama Bin Laden's group was one of the factions funded by Charlie Wilson. The long-term ramifications of this type of foreign policy should be obvious and hopefully avoided in the future. Anyway, it's a movie worth seeing but not worth owning.

This a great example f neo-conservative propaganda, exactly what created the contemporary mess. See the actual events and their connection in the BBC documentary "The Power Of Nightmares" It's available on Google. Can't believe Tom Hanks would star in this.

Meh, it's a little dry and very political. No action, adventure, romance, or anything like that. It's a good story, but demands a taste for military or political workings.

This movie affected me more than I thought it would. The main character appears to be a hopeless charade of a congressman but turns out to be possessed of integrity, determination and compassion. He ended the war in Afghanistan. It "don't get any better than that!" I cried at the end when he was unable to secure American support to rebuild Afghanistan and we all know how that turned out... an insightful, brilliant, wise yet despairing look under the microscope at the workings of the American government system. By the end of the film I feel for Charlie Wilson; his frustration is my frustration too. Mike Nichols, bravo!

The film was successful in entertaining this member of its audience. The veracity of the events is not something I can attest to. Doesn't matter. It's not a documentary. Phillip Seymour Hoffman was excellent and Tom Hanks was good enough. Charlie's Angels (remember them? ) were great.

The acting and character development was superb. For a movie about a war, my wife and I found it to be far superior to the usual blood and guts portrayal. The dialogue was witty and sophisticated. All this, and it tells a true story!

The movie tries to project a very important era in our history in the silliest and most superficial way. A good idea for a film made bad by a terrible script and an awful twisting of history. I was reluctant to go see it after the negative reviews I saw. The theatre was virtually empty. After suffering through it, I realized the the reviews I had read were even too kind. No wonder the theater was virtually empty, except of few optimists like me!!!

I enjoyed it but at times it felt like it was out to be a feel-good movie because of the War in Iraq. It was a good plot, but it still seemed like it was meant to help the US feel better about the dismal record in Iraq! Regardless, Tom Hanks, masterful as always!

You may not agree with the subject matter of this film but nevertheless, it does deliver through fine acting and directing. Ladies and gentlemen, this movie shows a small example of how a cold war is fought, during a time when we were all brainwashed into hating the ruskies.

Julia Roberts, Tom Hanks, Philip Seymour Hoffman... all awesome actors. The movie was well directed and well played. How ironic that the Americans supplied the Afghans with weapons to defeat the Russians... the same weapons that are used against the troops in the US invasion of Afghanistan.

This movie gets a "1" from me, not because of poor acting or writing; in fact, this acting in this film is excellent and the writing is pretty good, so good in fact that it underlines why this movie gets a "1". This film, simply put is nothing but Propaganda. It's similarities to historical truth are barren. The glaring omissions of WHY such a congressman and the "6th Wealthiest woman in Texas", and an Israelite would endeavour to help supply arms to Afghanistan (now the USA's mortal enemy, and a state that refuses to acknowledge Israel at all), other than from the goodness of their own heart, only underlines it transparency as fallacy and an attempt to maintain some sort of honesty and integrity within US congress - an even greater fallacy. The fact is that Mr. Charlie Wilson was on his way out of congress due to his multiple indiscretions and was looking for a last ditch effort to leverage his position within the congress to pad his now eminent early retirement by using his contacts within Israel, urged on by "the 6th wealthiest woman in Texas" who was in fact, the "unofficial" go between for the arms manufacturers, masked by some politically correct nonsense about woman's rights. (An Irony here is that that tactic was in fact used to convince a key congressman to get onside) In the end we have nicely padded pockets for those involved in funneling currencies to their semi-intended recipients - and everyone drops off the face of the earth once the Russians retreat from Afghanistan (meaning no more $$), leaving a hopeful (and none-the-less deceiving) people with nothing. Mr. Wilson purportedly makes a stand in congress for only $1 million to help reconstruct schools throughout Afghanistan, after funding in the neighbourhood of a Billion dollars for weapons was achieved. Are we supposed to buy this nonsense? And what of the 6th Wealthiest woman in Texas? Surely she could have funded that single handedly if in fact her heart was where she claimed it was - but she vanished. And Mr. Wilson, of the millions he made in kickbacks from the arms sales - where did he go? Let's face it America, (specifically the Producers of this film and Mr. Wilson himself), you think you're clever, but your Ego isn't nearly big enough to hide your failings. People do know how to think, and as history repeats itself over and over in the once great nation, events like this leave nothing but international embarrassment and suspicion. You have done with this film, what the producers of Black Hawk Down have already done and is being done more and more: Misrepresented history to make yourself look a little less like the high priced prostitute riddled with STDs that you have become. Shame.

I had a hard time with this film. Not the acting which has an all star cast who all do a very good job. But the subject matter. It celibrates arming rebels with weapons to shoot down russians. I couldn't help thinking about other countries suplying bombs to rebels to shoot down americans or canadians. It may be a long time since 911 but a have a hard time with the two face side of this film I wonder in 10 years if a russian will shoot a film about how he organized the distruction of the twin towers and changed the world forever.

History of a time period I lived thru -- well done, great acting. Hoffman is amazing once again. The nudity at the beginning was unneccesary and too bad because without it, it would be good for teens to see this story.

Full of pro-american propaganda... pro-democrat propaganda to be specific. Just in time for the US presidential elections. Also this movie is extremely anti-eastern europe... just in time to undermine Vladimir Putin's Time Magazine's Man of the Year. If you like actors mumbling underhanded clever comments back and forth, gratuitous nudity only seen in European films, and the United States, this movie is for you. Why not just rent Team America World Police? It gets the same 'ra ra USA! ' message across, but is whole lot funnier.

Phillip Seymour Hoffman's performance is worth the ticket alone. Everything else is just another story with a probable propaganda leaning one way or the other.

Classy; the way we always thought American politics operated but were afraid to ask. It is the showcase story that tells us why we are in the mess we are today in Afghanistan. Seymor will be up for best supporting actor and will win.

I am a huge fan of the book, and it was quite a shock to see the preview when it came out. It is next to impossible to put a story like this onto film and have it turn out well, so giving this film an 8 is like giving it a 10. This is one of the greatest stories of our time, the movie leaves alot out. If your not going to read the book, see this movie. Great acting, incredible story.

The movie was Just OK. With Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts, how can you miss. I am a Tom Hanks fan, I have to say this doesn't rank on the list of his top notch performances... But was worth watching Julia Roberts Kind-of TV-movie-ish and I would much rather focused on the "story" than the immoral behavior of a pathetic little things. This movie gives you a little history lesson, a little political science lession and the opportunity to see how real the need is to understand other countries lifestyles. Good message, lots of humor, fun &... definitely interesting...

It was a good movie. The story was great and you really got "sucked in" to the story. The only two problems were: a fair amount of swearing and partial nudity. Other than those two things, see this movie!

Jimminny Cricket! Is this what you pay good money for at a movie theater? The script would have worked if Hanks had played Charlie in Forest Gump style -- "Afghan's just a box'a'chock-ko-lates!" Movie is almost as naive as the recent Redford film Lions for Lambs -- cinematic propaganda with a wise commentary at the end. Don't see why Hollywood needs to editorialize on this -- did Frank Capra come back to life? All we would need is some honest global journalism and there wouldn't be any need to make films like this in the first place.

Too bad-- I expected soo much more. Acting was good by all. Story was ok but skipped around alot-- not enough character development. Its like a movie that tries to get across too much info in a short time. Came out of the movie feeling cheated. Read the book instead and not worthy of the big screen. Favorite character was "the other rogue cia agent". cheers.

Was Uncle Sam involved in a covert war in Afghanistan against Russia, just because the poor Afghan people needed to be saved? Afghanistan is the corner stone of Europe, Asia and Persia, a place of strategic importance. The story line and the performances kept me focused, albeit the movie did rub my value system the wrong way. I'm the 'peace & love' kind. Hanks and Roberts don't seem to go 'naturally' together. All counted, I give this one a solid 7½!
