The translation of the German Title is: "on the other side" whoever thought "The Edge of Heaven" was more appropriate must have been deeply into North American Marketing. Heaven has nothing to do with this movie. It is all about "the other side". The most refreshing thing about this movie is that it makes you think, it does not explain human nature to you. Great casting, interesting script, the story will stay with you for awhile. And you will also understand why Turkey is not part of the European Union as yet.

This movie's themes, pace, thoughtfulness make it a very worthwhile experience. It examines both personal and societal issues in a thought-provoking way. Some people may quibble with particular aspects of it, but it is a piece of art with a message on several different levels. Really good.

Best movie I saw in years! Thankfully a far cry from most Hollywood drone - a realistic drama acted superbly with characters easing from English into German and Turkish to communicate universal, human ideals and emotions. The bonds and events which bring them together and intertwine their faiths take on unpredictable turns and keep the viewer breathless from the start to finish. There are no protagonists in this story except fate itself. Everyone is a victim and a hero because once again, we see that forgiveness, self-redemption and pure love are the ultimate in human values. This is a must see movie and I hope it keeps on playing longer so I can bring out of town friends to watch it in September.

An excellent story, and more than well presented. Although confronted with a series of traumatic events, the characters are not even close to tragic. A must!

Saw this movie four times! It has a rich plot with layers and layers of throught provoking themes about love, forgiveness, redemption. I was riveted throughout the entire length of the story which unfolds in a very unexpected way and the ending, although implied, respects the viewer's intelligence and leaves him/her to figure it out for himself. Acting is superb!

I know- it looks boring but you have to see it. It’s on a different league from the trashy Hollywood movies that you will run to see because some famous actor is playing in it. And don’t worry; some of the scenes are in English. The only thing I didn’t get is- how the name of the movie is related To the story.

You care so much about each character, even if you do not agree with them. A lovely, hypnotic film with great acting. We all sat in the theater, watching the credits, not wanting to believe it was over.

Good film but not great. What was missing in my view was a goal, a main stream story line, it's just not there. It is well acted but the music is somewhat unappetising. The moral of it all is important but a 5-minute fable could have rendered the same message. At best, a rental.

[ATTENTION: This review reveals content of the movie.]
A great movie, you must see it. The ending is gorgeous, gives much credit to the audience's intelligence. The only rough part that did not hang well with the rest of the film was the the two girls kissing. What is the director trying to say here? That there is an erotic chemistry between them? If that that is the case then he took a very cheap way of demonstrating this, no artwork involved here, as if he is appealing to the common denominator or to the current narrative of the time that two girls kissing is somehow provocative (to the male, heterosexual fantasy) Can the German girl not help her out of the goodness of her heart or any number of altruistic reasons that we thought she has? Must everything come to cheap sex shots? Imagine the two were looking in each other's eyes, as if forever, as if seeing oneself, the past, the future and their destiny reflected back to one another like two mirrors in front of each other, imagine other ways that eroticism can be appreciated, sexuality only hinted and suggested, pleasure of a kiss or consumation forever deffered. That would have been more meaningful. Because as it is, they are reflecting their desires or destinies, they reflect in their kiss heterosexual fantasies.

A gorgeous movie about how every life has loose ends that can not be tied up. And yet there is still beauty. One of the most balanced and substantial movies I've ever seen. Every scene is worth its while and yet nothing ever seems to occur for the purpose of advancing the plot. Like life.

When one of the characters was driving, I really felt I was sitting next to him in the car. He daydreamed while looking at the scenery and so did I. I guess there is a million and one "moral" behind this movie or story telling. The one that really touched me was: while each character did his own fight due to his/her Strong felt values, reactionary belief system or history, some ran away others fought to get something and they fought hard. By the end of the movie though, one realizes to grab too much onto something or to repel something too hard will only lead either nowhere or fire back at you. Life has it that it is only once you release the object of your drive, things will come around at their pace. Go watch it and go take in the piece that you need from it.

It was a move combining a good and original story, with fascinating characters and a touch of Eastern "flavor". A good movie.

Very well done! I was a touch let down at the end, but then remembered that the original title would be translated "On the Other Side". As is so often the case, the original title of a film has a great deal more meaning than it does in other languages. At any rate, this is a brilliantly written, superbly acted, skillfully directed film. Highly recommended.

A really fine and profoundly moving movie with a realistic complexity and a refreshing and a humanist approach that makes it great. Some really good acting and characters where especially Lotte's mother stands out. Some scenes from Istanbul and the end scene brings one back to Yashar Kemal's "The Sea-Crossed Fisherman" (if one has read it) and, thus, successfully conveys a Turkey beyond Topkai Palace and the Blue Mosque.

This is easily the best Akin movie so far - and that means a lot because all of his earlier movies are amazing, particularly Head-On. This one is a masterpiece of atmospheric story-telling. It's the kind of movie that keeps you thinking long after watching it. While it's that it's mainly about death and loss, it would do the film injustice to reduce it to that. Go watch it!

Wonderful, moving film, but not sentimental. Intricate, personal narrative with some amazing performances. One reviewer had it right comparing it to Babel, with less emphasis on screenplay virtuosity and more detail on a few remarkable characters. Rich examination of cultural interplay between Germany and its large population of Turkish immigrants "imported" after the war, with lots of scenes in Istanbul. Recommended.

This is an excellent movie. All 4 in our party really enjoyed the film. The story is very carefully and intricately woven with each chapter fitting together with the rest like a hand in a glove. The acting is brilliant with the characters taking on real life personna. Although there is quite a bit of English dialogue, most of the film is presented with subtitles that are easy to read at the bottom of the screen. Definitely recommended.

This is a great movie. It woves the stories of Turkish emigrants to Germany with a critique of the culture of political repression in Turkey, a topic that is all the more current given authorities' attempts to silence Turkish voices that talk about the Armenian genocide of 1915 and the rights of Kurds in Turkey.

A total disaster of a movie. Too much going on in it. Its as if the producers wanted to cram as much as they could in the story, creating a far-fetched story that's all mixed up. And very disappointing ending, if you call that an ending.

Amazing movie! Definitely a must see in my opinion - if you're considering it, GO GO GO!! Very powerful, moving acting, shot in that 'you are right there with the characters, watching the story unfold' sort of way. Lovely scenery of both countries. Anyone who knows anything about European/Mediterrean culture will also appreciate how realistic the script is. You will at least love this movie if not be blown away by it as I was.

Reminds me of the film "Before the rain" in that violent stories of different people from 2 different countries interweave... It is a bit slow. There seems to be holes in the plot and some unlikely coincidences which I accept as poetic. Nevertheless, the characters are intriguing enough to make me want to sit through it. It is also wonderful that they can shoot good part of the film in Turkey.
