How can you rate this movie anything but a masterpiece? Scariest movie ever made and that was 30 some years ago. This movie is shocking by todays standards and we all know how far they go these days. I don't think the Film Review Board would even allow this movie to be released unless a few scenes were taken out. SCARY, SCARY, SCARY!!!

The horror in this movie is derived from how well it plays on the underlying cultural beliefs of Western Christian culture. This movie is beyond a doubt scariest for people who grew up in a semi-religious family with only faint memories of interactions with the church, Catholic or not. People who write that they laughed through this movie are in all likelihood those that were never mystified by the church. This movie plays all on my feelings about "but what if there was a devil..." and still terrifies me. I try and find it on a midnight viewing whenever I can.

[ATTENTION: This review reveals content of the movie.] Love reading the reviews of The Exorcist. I wish I was old enough to view the original in 1973, but I was only seven. I saw it for the first time on TV, edited and I only made it to the scene where Regan flys off the bed and then growls like a wolf. I had to turn it off, much to scary, and I'm not religious but was educated in a school run by Christian brothers, so I knew about religion. Many years later, when it was released on video, I sat down and watched it and I've been a fan ever since. They tried to add stuff in the 2000 version which is really tragic! The original is perfect. Does anyone know of web sites with original reviews and news articles from 1973 after it was released? I'd really like to get that. I understand they had priests and ambulances standing by. I'd love to go back in a time machine to see the original version in theatres and watch the reactions I've read about!

If there is such a thing as a horror film masterpiece, then this is it. Watching this film is not like watching horror films today, where you get a cheap scare, jump out of your seat, laugh a bit, eat some more popcorn, and then on to the next predicable scare. Viewing The Exorcist is not a pleasant experience at all. Even today, 30 years later, no film has come close to the horror and shock of watching this for the first time. I have to say I like the original version better. The additional scenes, symbolism and background music were not required and distract from the story and tension. Yes, the director did a great job, but the make-up, mechanical effects and sound effects are just as impressive. Not to mention great acting and a brilliant story!

[ATTENTION: This review reveals content of the movie.] Well, if I wasn't watching it with my brother, it would have been a lot scarier, but considering the fact he was laughing through the whole thing, especially the part where she doesn the crab walk down the stairs, what a talent, I had to laugh at that part, but other than that it was pretty good, it wasn't as scary as I thought/wanted it to be.

'The Exorcist' is an amazing movie for being an old horror movie. It is a little cheezy at parts but over all a pretty good movie.

This movie isn't scary at all they shouldn't of changed it! They should get the first version back in the theaters! And another thing some of the things they said were really dumb. But the movie looked realistic and there were shoking parts in it that make u jump! But I still go with what I said before, they should actually get the first version back!

I own this movie one of my favourites not only because of the terror but because it is based upon a true story, the religious aspects of this movie are a little unclear but it is a movie that everyone should watch and enjy. Not for the faint at heart or the over religious person, some may even find it offensive, A 10 from me.

[ATTENTION: This review reveals content of the movie.] If you think today's horror movies are frightening, well dont' go watch the exorcist, because it is, by far, the scarriest of all horror movies... first time I saw it (the original) I was 8 years old. Totally traumatized, I vowed never again to watch this kind of movie... Well, I've seen maybe 10 times since then, even on the big screen when the 2000 version came out in theatres, and still to this day, this movies scares the hell out of me!! I can't look at that kid's face when she's half decomposed, and that devilish voice just makes me sweat! Good scary movie, don't watch alone in the dark!!

I love this movie I have it Number 1 in my cabinet of movies it's so funny I even mimic the sounds that the girl made when she was possesed to scare my aunt she's scared to death of this movie but I can watch it again and again and laugh at the same parts because I find them funny expecially when the priest Merrin can in and Regain shouted MErrrIN real loud that was the funniest part to me, I love this movie and many others that have to do with Ouija Boards and the Devil.

[ATTENTION: This review reveals content of the movie.] The Exorcist has to be without the doubt the most wonderful, fascinating, horrifying movie ever to set foot on a video screen. In a way it's like watching a contotionist, it's so natrually unatrual, it disgusts you, but somehow you can't take your eyes off the screen. Even the shocks aren't like those of these modern slasher horror movies, the white faces that pop out at you rest in your mind, and scenes like the spider walk scene and the scene where she's being thrown up and down on her bed and then sits up and says in the demon's voice... well if you've seen it you know what I'm talking about... give you a shock, but unlike most shocks, the shock lasts through the whole time that you're watching that scene... it's amazing. One of the scariest things about this movie is Regan's utter innocence... there was no reason for her to be possessed... it could happen to me... it could happen to you.
