Very close to recent BP oil spill of the Gulf of Mexico, so no wonder this movie was put on back burner for some time. Could've been a much better flic.

This is based on a true story from the late 80s when some whales were trapped in ice in Alaska. Ronald Reagan was the president at the time. Not sure why it took so long to make the movie but the issues raised by the story are not dealt with at all. Oil and gas exploration don't get 2 minutes of time in this flic. Wonder why?

It was breath taking!! The best movie of the year! Wait, no decade no, century!!! I was all teared up from the very beginning to the very end!!! The best!!! Drop whatever your doing and go see it immediately!!! At the part when they saved the whale I was sobbing all over a stranger's shoulder!! I still get a little teared up whenever I think about it!!!

It's a good movie explaining mostly true events about three whales stuck 5 miles from open water with only a small open patch in the ice to surface to breathe. Whales are mammals and can stay under water for only short periods of time. The five miles was too long for them to go without surfacing and everything was frozen solid. The movie details all the effort and drama surrounding saving the whales. Kids will love it. Definitely take the kids. It's a family movie.

Did any of the animals die? Want to see it, but friend is worried about dying whales.

Not as good as I hope it to be based on the trailers and good reviews here. Was bored at times.

I enjoyed it, I was blown away, I didn't get emotional, but I still liked it, good one time watch, maybe if it's on tv and nothing else is on, watch it.

Loved this movie! Fast paced, incredible scenery, wonderful humourous touches, and a concerted effort on the part of all stake holders to accomplish a common purpose -- allowing the grey whales to have a chance at reaching the open sea. I admit that I do not remember this newsworthy event, and intend to research it. Movies based on, or inspired by a true story are always the.. best.. would watch the scene with the Russian icebreaker, and the freed whales breaching again and again!

I liked the setting and cinematography. The characters were likable and the story, interesting. The movie had very much of a Disney family feel to it, and that's OK for me, since I'm fond of those types of movies as well. Though they often aren't amazing, they are most often of the 'fell good' variety, and I like to feel good as much as the next guy. One other note, I liked that from a political perspective, the movie was fairly responsible in showing the two sides of the whale hunt, one of a perspective of fending off the potential extinction of these beautiful and intelligent creatures, and the other of a culture that for hundreds of years has respectfully hunting and killed them for their own survival, as well as their logical reasoning for why they have always intended to continue on with the tradition, though in reality, continuing to do so would likely end up with an ultimate end to their opportunity to do so anyway. Even more responsibly, the movie doesn't try to dictate what the viewer's opinion should be, but rather it just presents food for thought and understanding.

Very good family show and the underwater shots of the whales was very good. Yes this was about teamwork. Which we should all be a part off. I would recommend it. But very predictable.

Tear jerker, human interest movie, clash of cultures, drives down the point that we are all related in this world- animals and humans etc. then there is always the greed, money and ulterior motives. This movie will shake you out of complacency and encourages you be more involved in any way.

Well worth seeing and very inspiring. It never ceases to amaze me the true events that keep rolling out on the big screen. Great job by Drew Barrymore; good casting all around. The whales truly connected you as in The Dolphin Tale and it really was an incredibly big miracle. Working together in so many ways and with different cultures, it was amazing what was actually accomplished by the entire community and all the aid they received. Everybody was tuned in and the live footage at the end, added to the story's authenticity. We need more of this in the world; not just for animals and the environment but for humanity as well. Too many wars covering the globe! IMAGINE!!! Be accomplished.

It's a good family movie. I watched it with my wife and we enjoyed it a lot. Could have they improved a bit the acting of some actors... ? Yes... but overall, considering it is base on a true story, they did a very good job.

This is an excellent movie; very inspiring and touching story. I don't know how they did it, but the whale shots coming out to breathe were so cool, it was so real as if truly we were watching the rescue. A very good family movie. Drew Barrymore did a great job, she rocks.

It was a nice family movie! It was suspenseful, and grabbed my interest from the get go. It was neat to see all the "actual" footage added (reporters of the day) to support the film's authenticity as being "based on a true story". A good Saturday afternoon movie for any age!

Well not a bad movie. But, as someone who has worked in the arctic, you have to chuckle at a few things in the movie. (1) Keep the generator running even when it's going up in a Helicopter? C'mon folks... as one who's flown in Helicopters in -40C weather... they are just like a car... they generate heat to keep the inside warm. (2) A generator 30 SECONDS outside the helicopter and it's frozen stiff? Yeah right... see (1) If it did actually happen, the generator was frozen stiff before it got inside the chopper. (3) When it's -50C outside, you see your breath, and the air is full of ice crystals, almost like a haze... did you even see an actor's breath? Hardly. Yeah ok, so maybe I'm picky. And if you live in California it's as real as rain... other than that... it was ok.
