    A Streetcar Named Desire

Although time has allocated this film to Marlon Brando, top billing went to Vivien Leigh. Brando was the second actor to become a superstar after working with Ms. Leigh, and I wonder if her star was ultimately diminished by their success so early in their careers. Ms. Leigh, twice a recipient of Hollywood's coveted Oscar, also had the lead role as Scarlet O'Hara in 'Gone With the Wind', a film that catapulted Clark Gable (Frankly my dear...) to box office fame. With the emergence of these actors, her own reputation became suspect. Her life resembled that of her character Blanche in this film as manic-depression took hold of her, and she passed away at the age of 53. Ms. Leigh was on-screen almost the entire time in the adaptation of Tennesee Williams' play, and she and everyone involved turned it into one of Hollywood's best.
