    American Sniper

It lends to reason that American Sniper's huge, record breaking box-office haul would indicate something different about this particular war film. After seeing it, I believe it says more about the times we live in than it does about the film itself. Granted, a Clint Eastwood war film starring Bradley Cooper, about the most lethal sniper in US history, is certainly a recipe for success. Yet the enormity of its opening weekend still had me expecting something obvious I could point to that could explain the film's phenomenal appeal. And after careful reflection, I honestly think timing just might be it. Don't get me wrong, this is still an unbelievably powerful and tragic story. It is deftly directed, acted to perfection by Cooper and told with tremendous care and even a little humility. Yet several war films have accomplished similar feats and were not lauded like this. It's clear the movie-going public was clamoring for this film, maybe not for all the "right reasons" but certainly not because American Sniper breaks new ground in the war genre. For truthfully, the film covers fairly familiar dramatic territory. It does so expertly, but it is familiar territory nonetheless and as such, there is nothing particularly extraordinary about this film, nothing that firmly differentiates it from so many others of the genre. As for the film's many detractors, who insist it ignores history, I'll say only this. To expect a motion picture to atone for the lies and sins committed by government is not only unfair, but childish and ludicrous. You must be able to separate the man from the war. Wolfgang Petersen's Das Boot is my favourite war movie of all time. Just because I live and die with every agonizing moment the U-boat crew endured and recognize the film as a masterpiece, doesn't mean I wish Germany had won WW2. Shut up and grow up, in that order.
