If your wish and expectation is slimy, chest-bursting aliens, or the White House blowing up, you're not going to like Arrival very much. It isn't that type of alien invasion movie. It relies on a more intellectual approach, with linguistic science at the forefront, and is more concerned with evoking genuine emotion and the complexity of time, than with hammering the viewer over the head with special effects. Director Denis Villeneuve, who I believe to be one of the great director's out there, has crafted another impressive film here. Tense where it should be, but mostly low key, and not played for scares, even with another eerie, knockout score by Johanne Johannsson. Realistic, well acted, especially by Amy Adams, and intelligent, all three typically a rarity for alien invasion films. Well worth it.
