If Blackhat were made by any ordinary director, I would have to call it successful. Unfortunately, it was made by Michael Mann, who happens to be one of the most brilliant directors working and one of my personal favourites. So the fact that Blackhat is simply a good movie is nowhere near good enough for me, not when Mann is capable of so much more. The director does however, coax great work out of Chris Hemsworth, even if he does look more like a GQ model then a computer hacker. The action scenes are also very well done, with gun battles as loud and realistically jarring as one would come to expect from the architect of HEAT. The real problem here is the narrative, an unholy alliance between incomprehensible tech jargon and your more run of the mill thriller. The whole endeavor just isn't terribly interesting, a fact not helped by the film's grainy, almost lifeless texture and a lugubrious air about it, which makes your eyes heavy more often than not in the film's sluggish first half. Still ranks as decent entertainment, but a major letdown when you consider who's behind the camera.

Well written sir. I was looking forward to this movie since I'm a massive fan of Heat & Collateral. Mann has set standards for himself and looks like he's run short of them. Ah well, will catch it on Netflix then.
