Who could have foreseen that a 7th Rocky movie would not only be terrific, but would be the best one since the original? Certainly not I, who enjoyed all the Rocky movies except the atrocious 5th part, but never considered them anything beyond the single-minded, rather cheesy escapism that they were. Creed is another story altogether, attaining levels of emotional and dramatic significance that I didn't think were possible. There isn't one false or cheesy moment anywhere in sight. Writer/director Ryan Coogler deserves enormous credit for not only his expert staging of the boxing bouts, but for his poignant and heartfelt screenplay. Michael B. Jordan is fantastic, and Stallone has never been better, demonstrating a range and a vulnerability that is deeply moving. Rocky Balboa is a real person here, not just a slogan or an embodiment of wholesome American values. Truly a career performance from Sly and a knockout one from Jordan. You couldn't really ask for much more out of a boxing drama. That it happens to be a Rocky boxing drama, makes it all the better.
