    Gone Girl

This movie was at the very top of my must see list for a variety of reasons, not the least of which is the sure and steady hand of director David Fincher who has never made a bad film (though an argument could be made for the first half of Alien 3) I never read the novel by Gillian Flynn and judging by the narrative I'm glad I didn't because it's nothing more than laughable fluff. While Gone Girl may be marketed as a whodunit, the fate of Amy Dunne isn't really a mystery for very long and highlights the fact that Flynn's novel seems far more concerned with making a particular statement about men and women than it is with making its central plot device compelling. Thank God for Fincher who smartly downplays the more ludicrous aspects of the novel in favor of an exploration of our media/Nancy Grace culture's shocking naiveté and uninformed rush to judgement. Affleck is truly an ideal Nick Dunne, as he simultaneously embodies a man who's trustworthy yet not, who's sympathetic yet oddly detached. Rosamund Pike also works her ass off as Amy, which is about as demanding a role as could be expected, requiring so much of just about everything that it's a wonder she was able to pull it off at all. Tyler Perry, Kim Dickens and Neil Patrick Harris also offer strong support. The final third of the film literally defies description, with one scene that I'm sure audiences will NEVER EVER forget. So while I was admittedly disappointed in just how easy it was to decipher Gone Girl's central mystery, the quality of the acting, Fincher's pitch perfect direction and the shocking, sharp turn it takes in the third act make all the difference.
