Hell or High Water is simplistic and proud of it. Rarely is the term "simplistic" used not as a pejorative when referring to a film's plot, but in this case simplistic is exactly what's called for. After all, people from small town Texas don't really have time for nuance, and as this film proudly demonstrates, they do things their own way. Chris Pine and Ben Foster are both excellent as two brothers who decide to give a little payback to the bank branches of Midland Texas, and end up being doggedly pursued by a soon to be retiring sheriff, a terrific Jeff Bridges. Tough, matter of fact and to the point, but utterly engrossing. With honest, believable, flesh and blood characters, whose motivations make sense, and strike just the right emotional chord. Perhaps most surprising, is despite being shackled with the much overused bank robber motif, this film still feels fresh and like something we haven't really seen before. I'm thinking that's all Texas right there. One of the best dramas of the year.
