I’ve appreciated and liked Xavier Dolan movies. In “Juste la fin du monde”, it’s about emotions and thoughts of dysfunctional people and family. The family members in this movie were dysfunctional “fakes” whereas in my own family they were more dysfunctional “reals”. Yet similar threads of miscommunications, complex jumbled overwhelming emotions and thoughts, causing self-absorbed burdens that indirectly and directly hurt others (as well as oneself) for seemingly trivial and stupid reasons. There seems to be hate and meanness yet there is also love and base-level acceptance. Then add into the mix a family member who is “different” (here, a gay man, he also has AIDS which they don’t know, and he’s more successful in the outside world), which intensifies and further distorts the dynamics of dysfunctional people and the prism of family roles. Dysfunctional people from dysfunctional families, as well as people subjected to prejudice or who are considered marginal, may need to escape into movies but they may also need to feel validated with movies that resonate emotionally. The movie feels frustrating yet again to live through, yet satisfyingly validating.
