In 1958 in Germany few people were aware of the crimes perpetrated by the Nazis during WWII in concentration camps in Poland and elsewhere. A young prosecutor learns about Auschwitz through a coincidence, and starts assembling the pieces of the puzzle. It is difficult to investigate and prosecute war criminals, as almost every male 35 or older was associated in some way with the Nazis. As his knowledge of the horrors evolves, it strengthens his resolve, but also changes him. At times, the film feels clinical - prosecution is based on a receipt for Zyclon B, rather than a testimony of someone taking corpses to gaz chambers. The film concludes is that it is more important that all Germans know what happened in this very dark period of history than prosecuting everybody - an impossible task. A realistic portrayal of how awareness of the holocaust started developing in Germany among the post-war generation.
