Live by Night is Ben Affleck's fourth directorial effort and his first to be less than a resounding success. It has several terrific moments to be sure, and Affleck is unquestionably a very talented filmmaker, but his Prohibition set gangster film is far too scattered to be truly effective. Too many villains, too little focus, and without that big crowd pleasing set piece a la The Untouchables or Scarface that define the gangster classics of the past. A great supporting cast that includes Chris Cooper, Brendan Gleeson, Zoe Saldana, Sienna Miller and Elle Fanning is mostly wasted with roles that are never really fleshed out. Must have worked much better as a novel, but as a film, only intermittently enjoyable.
