Manchester by the Sea may be the perfect example of that famous Roger Ebert quote that "no good movie is depressing only a bad movie is". While it may certainly test the limits of that quote the film isn't depressing, but it is incredibly sad. Casey Affleck will break your heart as a shell of a man who is appointed guardian of his teenage nephew after his brother dies. To give anything else away would be to spoil what is a beautiful, and deeply moving film, one that melds a very funny coming of age story, with a devastating meditation on loss and the effect of tragedy on a family and on a community as a whole. Pitch perfect in every way, with a brilliantly understated leading performance. Without a doubt, one of the year's best films.
