Teenagers having to cope with adult situations. A recurring theme for Van Sant. This movie is a little gem. Heavy subjects treated with sensitivity, realism and hope. Hooper and Wasikowska are exploiting well the adolescent emotion bursts but succeeded in not overplaying them. This movie demonstrates well the inevitable stages of grief magnified by the fact that it is a teenager that has to deal with the losses and the often disarming sick kids' acceptance of their faith for their family and friends.
