Though not exactly what I would call gripping, Oliver Stone's Snowden is still in the tradition of the director's best work in terms of its importance and its societal relevance. Also, like much of Stone's work, you're bound to be a little unnerved by what you're told and what you're shown. Issues of security, privacy, massive state sanctioned overreach, journalistic integrity, and what patriotism truly means, all are covered here, layered within the now famous story of NSA leaker Edward Snowden. Gordon-Levitt is entirely believable here, his voice work particularly terrific. Rhys Ifans is also effectively eerie as a shadowy mentor, and it was great to see Nic Cage given a little something meaningful as well. Shailene Woodley is also great as Snowden's activist girlfriend. Timely, crucial and required viewing for anyone who seeks the truth, even when it might upset you.
