Move over 8 Mile, Get Rich or Die Trying and Notorious, there is a new king of the rap movie mountain, and it is director F. Gary Gray's timely, and ferocious NWA biopic Straight Outta Compton. A film which combines the best elements from dramas like Boyz in the Hood, with the equally entertaining aspects of the music biz, to forge a compelling, and illuminating introspective into the rise of the NWA in late 80's and early 90's. Focusing on the groups three primary members Andre Young (aka Dr Dre) O'Shea Jackson (aka Ice Cube) and Eazy-E (aka Eric Wright), the film, unlike many musical biopics of late, delves deep into the lives of it's subjects, not shying away from some of the more controversial elements, and truly examines what made these young men tick. All three central performances are electric. Though it is O'Shea Jackson Jr, son of Ice Cube, (playing his real life father) who is nothing short of a revelation, not to mention a no-brainer casting choice given the uncanny resemblance he has to his dad. The film also touches on the testy relationship between LA police and the community, both amidst the Rodney King riots and before, a move which adds even further social relevance to a film already rife with it. And yes, for those just looking to kick back, enjoy the music, and revel in the glory of the NWA and their hoochie-filled parties, this film will please you as well. It works on absolutely every level, and hits every target it aims for. One of the best films of the year, and the finest, most sprawling rap biography ever made.
