    The Dark Knight Rises

Honestly, the last time I can remember being this stoked to see a movie was this time 4 years ago when the last Batman chapter was released. And although this entry doesn't have anything that tops Heath Ledger's brilliance as the Joker, it is still an exiting and satisfactory conclusion to Nolan's Dark Knight vision. Let's get the bad out of the way first. Rises is as chaotic, rushed and convoluted as its predecessor, with far too many needless characters, not the least of which is Catwoman. Though well portrayed by Anne Hathaway, equal parts smart and sassy, the character never rises (ha ha) out of the perfunctory. They could have completely removed her character from the movie and I'd doubt anyone would notice. That, coupled with a lack of action prevent this film from reaching the grand heights that some people claim; a ten it certainly is not. However, as was proven by the Dark Knight, an inspired villain can make up for a lot of plot holes, meandering and silly side stories. And Tom Hardy's Bane is certainly that. His towering physical presence, pain laced voice and merciless tactics combine to mold a formidable and menacing foe. The film is by far at its best when Bane is on screen. When he's not, it suffers. As for Bale, this is his best performance to date as the caped crusader, with admittedly far more substance to work with than previous films. The rest of the supporting cast equate themselves nicely. Michael Caine has some emotional moments that ring through, as does Joseph Gordon Levitt whose character is a little more than just a cop. There are also a couple of twists and at least two memorable cameos (one dramatic, the other hilarious) to add to the fun. When all is said and done, although not the second coming of movie-making like some predicted, this is still about as good as any superhero based film could hope to be. For Nolan's entire trilogy is a long way from being just about a guy in a rubber bat-suit.
