To those unfamiliar with writer/director Shane Black's comedic gem Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, the Nice Guys will seem like perhaps the funniest movie they've seen in quite a while. It is however, when comparatively juxtaposed against Black's earlier effort, only moderately successful. I have to admit, the trailer sold this film brilliantly. It looked every bit the instant comedy classic, when in reality, its just a pretty funny film. Crowe is very relaxed and excels quite well in one of his first openly comedic roles, but it is Gosling who totally steals the show here. A finer, more hilarious portrayal of a mustached, bumbling private eye you are unlikely to find. Just an excellent bit of comedic acting, proving the guy really can do almost anything. The narrative is twisty and purposely vague, with some oddball touches here and there, which are certainly a Black trademark. It's just never as consistently funny or entertaining as it is in parts. Still worth a look though for those in search of a few laughs.
