This film flirts with greatness in the opening act with Ryan Gosling's brilliant and heartbreaking portrayal of a poor motorcycle carney who tries to support his new born son by robbing banks. Gosling is so good and so likeable that the first of 3 stories just flies by. Bradley Cooper anchors the somewhat familiar second act playing a cop trying to deal with an on the job injury, a new born son of his own, as well as police corruption. Cooper is also very good but his story just isn't captivating when juxtaposed against Gosling's. The third and final story I won't spoil but it is this contrived and overly melodramatic final act that prevents the film from truly achieving greatness. Still worth seeing for Gosling alone and does have remarkable insight into the many faceted father/son relationship.
