I was a fan of the first Raid. Sure it was threadbare on plot, but that hardly mattered with the sheer amount of visceral action on display. Now here comes The Raid 2: Berendal. Rather than simply resting its laurels on the plot of its predecessor, Raid 2 attempts to serve up an epic story to accompany the visceral action. Unfortunately the writer(s) have cobbled together a cliched gangster tale. There isn't a single character or trope in this that hasn't been done to death and done much better in other films and the fight scenes themselves seem repetitious. There's something bizarrely static about the whole proceeding. I'm sure that the latter half contains some sorta mindblowing fight scenes, but I waltzed out halfway thru to get my money back. It was just too dreary and unlikeable. Like a dead thing.

Actually wish I could backtrack on this one. On rewatch I'd give it a solid 8 bordering on 9. It's a bloody action cinema watermark.
