This film was blatantly a vehicle for propaganda, makes me wonder why the film maker would go out of their way to spend so much money and create a script for a film that deliberately misinforms its viewers as to what is the actual situation in Saudi Arabia, what are the people's customs and what role their culture and religion play in their lives. I don't really see what the point of including Quran recitals in the story line was, the character of Wadjda could have just as easily won the money from a school spelling bee or science fair... ESPECIALLY if the film maker was going to use incorrect translations of the Quran's verses in the subtitles, recited partially without care for the remaining parts of those short verses, and out of context. As well as not give subtitles all together for the verses which were beautifully recited in their entirety. There is a lot more to Saudi Arabia than the little neighbourhood that the film took place in. The deliberate attempt to make these people look backward to audiences unacquainted to cultures of the region, I think is a little irresponsible especially given the times we face today. The film started of great I was excited to see how it developed, it was witty and interesting, until it became more clearly to me a very clever vehicle for misinformation in the second half. A shame because the actors were very very likeable and did a great job. If you watch the film keep your eyes out for the nuances that I mentioned and take it totally as a fictitious story based on the film makers whims and not an accurate representation of the truth. I would have liked to give it a 10 but the content and intent compelled me to give it far less.
