A fan of Spielberg I am. Because to be a fan of Spielberg is to be a fan of film and the joy of film making. His boyish love for movie-making is evident in every frame of Warhorse, a surprisingly affecting WW1 drama literally starring a horse. The film chronicles the exploits and trials of a horse from birth to farming, to forced military service (both sides) and beyond. Yes it's a little smaltzy, and it does drag at certain points but there are some deeply moving and human moments, one "collaboration" in particular is quite humorous and joyful. People looking for Saving Private Ryan type battle scenes will be let down, for this may be set during war time, but it isn't really a war movie. It reminded me a bedtime story a grandfather would tell full of excitement and wonder, a little danger, but it ends well. A good family film, though it may be a little too frightening for the young ones.
